Nunnery Wood students' fundraising efforts for Acorns Hospice and St Richard's Hospice
BackNUNNERY Wood High School students and staff have always prided themselves for their fundraising and since restrictions have lifted, have been able to return to some of the activities that they have been used to doing.
Music teacher, Freya Harper made the most of being able to return to her local sports centre by taking on the Swim22 challenge to raise awareness and money for diabetes.
Drama teacher Steph Young braved walking across hot embers and raised over £230 towards the Cheltenham Animal Shelter.
An annual event, which the school has always supported was able to take place again in September 2021. Staff contributed to making cakes for the Macmillan Cancer support coffee morning. The proceeds from the sales raised £321.18 for the cause.
The school’s chosen charity for 2020/21 was Acorns Hospice and the school were able to present a cheque for more than £1,000 to the hospice.
The chosen charity for this year is St Richard’s Hospice. Victoria Owen, charity co-coordinator at the school and an ambassador for the hospice, was busy planning some exciting events for staff, students and local community to become involved in.
Year Team Leader, Emma Telger who is also charity ambassador for the hospice, kicked off the fundraising efforts by taking part in the annual two-mile Santa dash – a group of supporters from the school, including some pupils also ran with her.
GCSE art students and the DT club worked hard to make a variety of craft items to sell at the St Richard’s Hospice Festive lunch which took place in Malvern and raised a total of £400.
Non-uniform day helped swell the total, and in addition to raising money, the school choir visited the hospice just before Christmas to sing carols to patients and their families, standing in the gardens.
And when the festivities had ended, families and students of the school were involved in collecting Christmas trees and raising more money for the hospice.
Other charities have also benefited from Nunnery’s efforts. Students across all year groups donated food items to the Foodbank.
The school has so far managed to raise a total of £1,373.36 for St Richard’s.
Victoria Owen said: “At Nunnery Wood High School we have strong values that bind our community together, part of this is encouraging our students to have compassion in their hearts for others and understanding what it means to be charitable.
“We are excited to be supporting St Richard’s Hospice and working with the fundraising team to plan more exciting events next year.”
